Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3 is taught in years 7, 8 and 9, involving pupils aged between 11 and 14. At the end of this three year period, the majority of pupils sit KS3 SATs. At the end of Key Stage 3 pupils choose options for the GCSE exams they wish to sit. Some subjects are obligatory; all students have to take a technology, a language, Maths, Religious Studies, English Literature, English Language and at least a single award in science (equivalent of one GCSE). Most students take a dual award (equivalent of two GCSEs) however the top set take triple science (equivalent of three GCSEs) but this includes a weekly after-school session. Despite this, a degree of choice is introduced as students are able to choose their technology, their language and two other options such as Geography, Music or Drama.

Key Stage 4

Pupils aged 14 to 16, in years 10 and 11. During this time, privileges enjoyed by the pupils are increased, with some pupils permitted to leave school during lunchtimes. At the end of this time, or possible during it, depending on which subjects studied, pupils sit their GCSEs. Success in these exams can determine whether a pupil is permitted to continue in the school and join the sixth form.

Sixth form

This is the final stage of the pupil's education, before they leave school and possibly go on to attend a university or college or seek employment.

The sixth form is joint with Beverley Grammar School and is mixed with pupils splitting their time between the High and Grammar schools. The seventh form also welcomes pupils who have previously attended other schools. During pupil's time in the 'Joint Sixth', as it is known locally, they sit both AS and A2 exams.
